Fleet Evolution, a Midlands-based salary sacrifice green car scheme specialist, has recorded a 400% surge in electric car enquiries following the Government’s decision to remove benefit in kind tax from 2020/21.
Andy Leech, Fleet Evolution managing director, said the message of 0% BIK has sent a clear signal to the company car market.
He said: “We’ve always considered ourselves at the forefront of electric car take up, but the sudden increase in interest has surprised even us.
“In monetary terms the original proposed benefit in kind of 2% was a game changer anyway, from 2020 electric car costs under schemes such as ours had been slashed, the removal of this 2% charge doesn’t add to the already dramatic savings significantly but we think it’s the message it sends to employees.”
Leech believes the UK has now reached the point where electric cars will really take off.
He said Fleet Evolution is already supporting electric cars with free charge points and roadshows for its customers, but the Government is now taking some very visible steps to boost adoption and this sends a clear message to employees that it’s time to go green.
He added: “This should send a clear message to manufacturers to get behind the UK electric car market, with demand already outstripping supply while diesel car sales plummet.”
Electric vehicle sales almost tripled in the UK in July and according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), diesel registrations have dropped by nearly 20% year-to-date, down to a market share of 27%.
